The results [of BARR] have been positive. A study found that Hemet High freshmen in the program earned significantly more credits, had higher grade-point averages and did better on math and reading tests than their ninth-grade peers not in the program. Since the program’s inception, the number of Hemet High freshmen who failed at least one class dropped from 32 to 18 percent while suspension rates plummeted from 29 to 6 percent. The graduation rate also climbed to 93 percent for the Class of 2015, Hemet Unified School District data show. The success prompted the district to expand the program to West Valley, Hamilton and Tahquitz high schools. The Val Verde and Moreno Valley unified school districts also have adopted the strategies.
